Newark Appropriates $50k To Fight Wind Project

A year after the Newark Planning Commission learned Eolian Renewable Energy had its eye on the Hawk Rock ridgeline, town meeting voters in the Northeast Kingdom town voted 88 to 12 in favor of appropriating $50,000 to continue legal opposition to a wind testing tower.

Newark planning commission chair Kim Fried said the Town Meeting Day vote will raise taxes in town. The entire town budget totals around $400,000 and town and school spending combined are only about $1.5 million.

“Fifty thousand dollars is a huge commitment by the citizens of Newark, but the dollars are nothing compared to commitment of spirit,” said Fried.
